This session will highlight several grant opportunities and grant projects offered through partners in the Collaborative Learning Center (Center for Language Study, Instructional Technology Group, Center for Media Initiatives, the Graduate Teaching Center, and the Library). Strategies for taking advantage of these funding opportunities at Yale will be discussed.

This session will concentrate on Flickr’s usefulness as a tool for research and for teaching. Flickr is a popular website for organizing and sharing photographs. The site gives users a significant amount of control over how their photos are organized and viewed via tags and flexible copyright licenses. Users can also create and participate in organized groups with others or keep their images private. Finding images in Flickr will also be discussed. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own ideas and uses of Flickr to the conversation.

VoiceThread is an online media album that can hold essentially any type of media (images, documents and videos) and allows people to make comments in 5 different ways - using voice (with a microphone or telephone), text, audio file, or video (with a webcam) - and share them with anyone they wish. Foreign Language Research Specialist, from the Center for Language Study will offer a quick tour of VoiceThread, show some official VoiceThread tutorials, and explain the process of uploading and commenting on images.

Michael Farina
Lector in the Department of Italian, will then demonstrate how he uses VoiceThread in his classes at Yale.

Many academic digital collection projects are focused on special collections and college archives. Such projects seek to bring collections “out of the basement” and enable greater access to valuable and specialized research materials. However, undergraduate students and faculty often have very different needs and expectations of these digital materials than experienced researchers or the general public.

When: March 26 @ 4pm

What: 30 minute informal session to help students find the perfect book for their research.

Who: The sessions are intended for Yale students and are run by Yale University Librarians.
